One of the most difficult things to take into account at the moment is covid. Due to covid we also waited a long time to book tickets, because we weren't sure yet whether we could go to Asia first. A large number of countries in Asia were closed for travelers (from the Netherlands). As a result, we did not know until almost 2 weeks in advance whether Asia or Central and South America would be our first destination. When all countries in Asia on our list except for Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Thailand were still closed, we took the plunge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We decided to go to Central and South America first! It is the first time for both of us that we travel to America. We therefore both have no idea what to expect and how we are going to like it. The first country we visit here is Panama. We did not plan to go here at first, but when we saw that this would be the country of our stopover to Costa Rica, we decided to spend some time here first. On January 10, we booked our first ticket from Schiphol (Amsterdam) to Panama City for Wednesday January 26. From that moment on, the preparations could really start. In this blog we will share with you what preparations we have made, and what we are taking with us to Central and South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vaccinations for a year of traveling<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we decided in which continent we would start, we already knew that a number of vaccinations were important to get. This is a long list for the long journey we are going to make:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-6ebde76c-2985-402c-b2a8-78c0ada47005\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DTP<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hepatitis A<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hepatitis B<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yellow fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Typhoid fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Japanese encephalitis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BCG (tuberculosis)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rabies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These vaccinations are quite pricey if you ask me, but they are important to prevent getting very sick. Vaccinations are certainly not mandatory, but are recommended. We ourselves have achieved almost all of them except BCG and Rabies. If you do want to get the vaccinations, make sure you are on time. For some vaccinations you will receive multiple injections, whereby there must always be a certain time between the injections; for some shots this can even be a month. For example, we ourselves were only just in time, and we were only not able to get the third hepatitis B shot. In our case that was not really a problem, because 2 injections is sufficient for the time being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So think carefully about whether and which vaccinations you need and want to get, and make sure you inform yourself about this in time. This can often be done at your own GP or at the GGD (in the Netherlands), you can also find many clinics online that provide travel vaccinations. We got them from the Stadskliniek ourselves, because we've had good experiences with them before.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"622\" src=\"https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC03726-2-1024x622.jpg\" alt=\"pasporten, vaccinaties, gele boekje, documenten voor een jaar op reis\" class=\"wp-image-6770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC03726-2-1024x622.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC03726-2-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC03726-2-scaled-600x365.jpg 600w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC03726-2-768x467.jpg 768w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC03726-2-1536x934.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC03726-2-2048x1245.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC03726-2-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC03726-2-705x429.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The vaccination passport is very useful to keep track of all vaccinations and to take it with you on a trip as proof.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Backpacks<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also bought our backpacks before we knew which continent we would travel to first. We went looking for a backpack that meets what we need for a long trip. For this we were both able to find a good backpack of 90 liters at <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">decathlon<\/mark>For the backpacks we have vacuum bags for our clothes (which you can use without a vacuum cleaner) <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">packing cubes<\/mark> for the rest of the stuff to be able to pack everything separately. I can definitely recommend this to keep your backpack in order during your trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You would think that a 90 liter backpack is more than enough for all your stuff. Still, I can tell you that it is quite difficult to get everything in. We personally like to have enough options in terms of clothing to choose what we want to wear at the moment. We both had to make some concessions in this regard, because what we had in mind in the first place was certainly not all going to fit. This is also only the second time for us that we pack a backpack. And for the first time for such a long journey. The more you do this it will only get easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we knew we were going to Central and South America, we started packing the backpacks. Although January to May are the best travel months for many countries in Central and South America, you should take into account the height difference in some countries. For example, it will be a lot colder in a higher place than in a low-lying place on the coast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of these differences, we had also misinterpreted the climates ourselves and we thought that countries such as Peru and Chile are generally not so warm during this period. As a result, we initially packed too many warm clothes. Fortunately, we found out in time that this only applies to the higher areas, and that you should therefore not bring too many warm clothes. In the end we packed the following items for our trip to South America.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC00373-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"inpakken voor een jaar op reis, backpack inpakken, tas inpakken, inpakken voor op reis\" class=\"wp-image-6774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC00373-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC00373-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC00373-scaled-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC00373-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC00373-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC00373-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC00373-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/graduatedtravelers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DSC00373-705x470.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Will we ever be able to get all the necessary stuff in our backpacks\u2026?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our checklist for a year of travelling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our backpacks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>3 bikinis\/swimwear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 pairs of shoes; 1 pair of sturdy walking shoes, 2 pairs of sneakers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10x underwear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10 pair of socks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 bras<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 sports leggings + bras + shirts; This is because we personally like to exercise several times a week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4 shorts + 1 skirt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 dresses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 trousers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 thermal shirt; this allows you to easily create layers if it is cold in a higher area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 sweaters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>flip flops<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>swimming shoes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 microfibre towels; these are really recommended if you go backpacking, because they dry much faster than regular (bath) towels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rain poncho; we have opted for a sturdy reusable instead of disposable ponchos.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>plane cover; this one is really handy to put your backpack in when you go flying. The plane cover looks a bit like a large sports bag with a long handle. By putting your backpack in it you have less chance that the strings \/ rods get stuck on something during transport. You could also lock it with a small padlock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rain cover for your backpack; if it starts to rain, you can make sure that the things in your backpack will not get wet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">world plug<\/mark>; this is very important, otherwise there is nowhere to charge your phone, laptop or other electrical devices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a first aid kit; always handy to have with you!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sports attributes; because we want to exercise during our trip and are not sure whether there will be an (affordable) gym everywhere, we have some elastic bands with us to be able to do exercises.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>waterproof bag; this one is super useful if you are going to do an activity where it is possible that you will get wet. This way you can always keep your important items, such as your phone, passports, camera, etc. dry. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our hand luggage we packed the most fragile and valuable items such as: sunglasses, chargers, games and equipment; to be able to work and to record our journey well. It <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">most important<\/span> to take with you are actually the following items:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Passports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Driver's license and international driver's license; it differs per country whether you need this or whether your Dutch driving license is sufficient. You can find this information online, for example at the Anwb, in their shops you can also immediately get the driver's license.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>credit card; preferably more than 1 if possible. We have not done this ourselves, but we soon found out that this is not very practical. You can read more about this later in the tips&amp;tricks blog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Debit card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Papers specific to the country you are traveling to. In the end, our backpacks weighed about 14 and 17 kilos and we both had a small bag of a few kilos.
