On the edge of the Nuwara Eliya district lies the impressive Bomburu Ella Waterfall, also known as the Perawella Waterfall. It is the widest waterfall in Sri Lanka and without a doubt the most stunning one we saw during our trip through the country. Since Bomburu Ella is not yet well-known among tourists, it is wonderfully peaceful—a hidden gem between Ella and Nuwara Eliya. A true must-visit for your trip through Sri Lanka.
The Bomburu Ella Waterfall is the widest waterfall in Sri Lanka. With a height of 50 meters and a width of 20 meters, it is truly impressive. The waterfall consists of several smaller streams that come together into one powerful flow. The force with which the water plunges down ensures that you get quite wet during your visit. A towel or an extra set of clothes is therefore highly recommended!
By the way, you can also reach the other side of the waterfall. From there, you get an even more stunning view, but you need to know how to get there. You have to cross the water using a few large stones. It takes a bit of searching and some climbing (with a risk of falling into the water), but the view from there is definitely worth it. When we were there, only a few local visitors were on the other side, as they were familiar with the area. So there are plenty of spots to admire the waterfall from different angles.
Note: The waterfall is especially popular among local tourists, which means you can still enjoy an authentic experience here, far from the crowds you sometimes see at more well-known spots like Ravana Falls or Diyaluma Falls.
The hike to the Bomburu Ella Waterfall is fairly short and not difficult or challenging. The walk takes about 30 minutes. Only the first section, with some steeper steps leading to the entrance, is a bit strenuous.
After that, you walk along a well-maintained path of about 2 kilometers, passing small streams and mini waterfalls. Here and there, locals are along the path selling snacks or drinks—perfect if you feel like taking a short break. During the walk, you occasionally catch glimpses of the impressive Bomburu Ella Waterfall.
When you arrive by car, you’ll see several small restaurants where you can park for around 200 LKR (~€0.55). From the parking area, or wherever you are dropped off, follow the stairs up along the rocks to the entrance. You can’t miss it thanks to all the large signs.
The entrance fee for the Bomburu Ella Waterfall is only 700 LKR (~€2–3). This is likely because the waterfall is not yet very popular among tourists.
No, you cannot swim directly under the Bomburu Ella Waterfall because of the strong current. However, along the path, there are a few spots where the water is calmer and where you can wade or take a dip.
Tip: Even if you’re not planning to swim, it’s wise to bring dry clothes or at least a towel. With the enormous force of the plunging water, you’re bound to get wet!

The waterfall is easiest to visit from Nuwara Eliya. The ride takes about 60 minutes one way and 50 minutes back by tuk-tuk. It’s quite a steep route, so drive carefully if you’re driving a rental tuk-tukyourself. And make sure you have a full tank, especially for the return trip. Fortunately, the views along the way make up for the travel time: it’s a beautiful route with several spots where you can stop briefly to enjoy the scenery.
Tip: You can also visit the waterfall from Ella, but the journey will be considerably longer. In that case, it’s a good idea to arrange a driver or guide .
The best time to visit Bomburu Ella Waterfall is in the morning, before 12:00 PM. At that time, it’s still quiet, and you have the chance to enjoy the waterfall almost to yourself. Around midday, more local visitors arrive, especially on weekends.
In terms of season, the waterfall is at its most beautiful at the end of the rainy season, when there is still plenty of water flowing but the paths are dry. We visited Bomburu Ella in March, which turned out to be a perfect month: plenty of water, little rain, and pleasantly cool hiking weather. The ideal months are February and March, just after the rainy season in the Nuwara Eliya region.
Yes! Of all the waterfalls we visited in Sri Lanka, we found Bomburu Ella without a doubt the most beautiful and impressive. This is not only because of its size and power, but also due to the lush surroundings, the relaxed hike to get there, and the fact that you’re not yet surrounded by hordes of tourists. It’s precisely this combination that makes the experience extra special.
