Guatemala is certainly not an expensive country to travel through. It is not as cheap as Nicaragua, for example, but certainly not as expensive as Costa Rica or PanamaIt largely depends on your travel style and the locations where you stay. For example, you can stay in a very nice and luxurious hotel in Antigua and eat one croissant for 3 euros, but you can also sleep in an affordable hotel/hostel and eat a full meal for 3 euros. Around Lake Atitlan Lake Atitlan you also have many more affordable hotels and restaurants than in and around Anitgua. So you can make it as expensive as you want.

Guatemala is best known for its beautiful indigenous culture and the fascinating history of the Mayan civilization, which you can admire, for example, in Tikal You will also find many volcanoes, untouched jungles and other beautiful natural phenomena here, such as Semuc Champey.

No, Guatemala is not unsafe to travel through. You just have to be a little more careful sometimes and above all use your common sense. Robberies and robberies do occur in Guatemala, but this does not mean that it is unsafe everywhere in the country. Most of the locals are super friendly and helpful. There are a few things you'll want to take into account:

  • Avoid Guatemala City or don't stay there longer than necessary, as it is the most unsafe place in the country.
  • Do not use public transport, but book shuttles or use taxis to get from A to B.
  • It is sometimes not recommended to do certain activities alone, especially at night (such as climbing the Indian Nose). Book a tour for this.
  • Guatemala is popular among backpackers. So you will always be surrounded by fellow travelers, but especially use this when you travel alone.

Guatemala is popular because of all the questions answered above. Traveling through Guatemala is very affordable, the country is incredibly versatile and beautiful, the weather is perfect for activities and you can meet many fellow travelers who, just like you, are discovering all the beautiful places in Guatemala.

The best time to travel to Guatemala is between November and May. During this period the least rain falls and the weather is the best. This is also the high season, so you will meet the most fellow travelers during this period.

Would you rather not go to Guatemala during the busy season? That's possible! During the rainy season there can be heavy showers, but it will not rain all day long. The temperatures also remain pleasant during the months of June to October.

You will need at least 2 to 3 weeks to visit all the beautiful places in Guatemala. The most ideal is 3 weeks, so that you have time to really do and see a lot per destination. Do you have more than 3 weeks? Great! Then you have time to relax a little more in between and do many activities per destination.
