Nicaragua is a different kind of travel destination than its neighboring countries in Central America. It is a bit drier and there is little space to go out into nature. Yet Nicaragua has its own beauties and charms and that lies mainly in the beautiful colonial cities. In Nicaragua you can wander wonderfully between the beautiful, old, colonial buildings. But a day (or 2, 3 ...) lying on the beach is also part of the relaxed vibe. Curious about the best places in Nicaragua?

San Juan del Sur, one of the best places in Nicaragua
You come to San Juan del Sur to relax and eat delicious food. It has a lovely beach for sunbathing and swimming. In addition, it is surrounded by many more beautiful beaches that you can visit. In the evenings, dine on the beach while watching the beautiful sunset. Or walk into one of the cozy streets to eat a tasty bite for a nice price. Before dinner, visit the Jesus Christ statue for a beautiful view of the city during the sunset.

Ometepe
Ometepe is also definitely one of the nicest places in Nicaragua. Ometepe is a volcanic island in the huge Lake of Nicaragua. There is plenty to do on the island itself. Rent a scooter and you will be able to explore the whole island. While driving you will of course enjoy the beautiful views of the volcanoes and the huge lake. But you will also find a number of small towns with locals around the island. Along the way, you can cool off in Ojo de agua. And if you're up for a real adventure, you can choose to climb one of the two volcanoes.

Granada
Granada is one of the beautiful colonial cities in Nicaragua. It is full of old, beautiful and impressive buildings. There is a very nice central square where everything happens. Of course you want to do a city tour here to admire all the colonial buildings and to learn a bit more about the history of it. Often you get this tour for free when you book another tour in the area. For example, you certainly don't want to miss the Masaya volcano nearby, and you can combine it well with a full-day tour.

Leon
Leon is another beautiful colonial city that is definitely one of the nicest places in Nicaragua. Here too you will find a lot of beautiful, colonial buildings. The nice thing about Leon is that these buildings often contain new hip tents. In these tents you can eat good food and drink delicious coffee. In addition to the colonial buildings, Leon is also known for the many street art that you will find here. Leon's biggest highlight is certainly the huge, beautiful, white cathedral on the main square. And if you're up for an exciting activity, you don't want to skip the volcano boarding of the nearby volcano Cerro Negro.
